General Motors has announced it will offer a $500 discount toward the purchase or lease of a new car to each of the 1.3 million American owners affected by the recent ignition switch-related recall.
The owners can use the cash allowance to buy any 2013 to 2015 model year Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac. Those that aren’t interested in purchasing a new car but are concerned with the safety of their current automobiles, can ask for loaner vehicles from GM dealers.

Customers who request a loaner will be able to use it until their recalled car is fixed. Additionally, concerned drivers can have their vehicles towed to the dealership at the manufacturer’s cost.

“GM will not market or solicit owners using this allowance. We ask that you not market to or solicit these customers either. This allowance is not a sales tool; it is to be used to help customers in need of assistance,” GM said in a notice to dealers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As we’ve previously mentioned, General Motors faces investigation from both the NHTSA and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The US ignition switch recall, which has been linked to 13 deaths, includes about 1.3 million units of the 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2007 Pontiac G5, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR, 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and 2006-2007 Saturn Sky.

In Canada, GM is recalling the 2005-2006 Pontiac Solstice, while its European arm is calling back the 2007 Opel GT.

In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and the road conditions or some other jarring may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. If the key is not in the proper position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash.

General Motors has to respond to a 27-page query received from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by April 3.
