GM Mexico Turns 75

American manufacturer GM announced today the company is celebrating 75 years since it began its operations in neighboring Mexico. Since then, the carmaker has became the largest investor, producer and exporter in the automotive industry Mexico has ever known.

Employing 11,500 people directly, the American manufacturer is also indirectly responsible for the creation of an extra 90,000 jobs. Since it arrived in the country, the carmaker manufactured 7 million cars, 20 million engines and 4 million transmissions.

"We have accomplished goals that seemed unattainable, thanks to the efforts and dedication of Mexican talent," said Grace Lieblein, GM Mexico CEO.

In the beginning of the month, GM announced it plans to invest more in Mexico, especially in the Ramos Arizpe plant. $500 million will be dedicated to creating an assembly line for new engines and a new vehicle.

The new engines to be manufactured here include eight-cylinder engines with SIDI technology (spark-ignition direct-injection). Part of the money will be used to upgrade the plant's production lines for the addition of a new model to the queue. The details about the new car have not yet been released.

"At GM we know that the customer satisfaction is the key to success and the main reason of our work," added Ernesto M. Hernandez, vice president Sales, Service and Marketing for GM Mexico.

"We know there are always opportunities for improvement and for that reason, today more than ever, we are working hard to carry out all the necessary actions to stay in the preference of our customers in order to stay with GM for life."
