Fiat Sells Five Prima Edizione a Minute in the US

It took Italian manufacturer Fiat just 100 minutes to get rid of the first batch of 500 models to be sold in the US. Known as the Prima Edizione, the first batch of 500s to reach US shores have been sold, at an average of five a minute, with those wanting one flooding the Fiat US website and paying $500 in advance to reserve one.

Of course, taking into account the fact that the reservations are fully refundable, those still planning to get their hands on such a 500 model might have a chance. Although the official website lists the current session as terminated, those interested can still apply for a car. They will be put on a waiting list and announced should somebody gives up their reservation.

The success of this first sale of Fiat models in the US proves that the 50,000 vehicles target set by the Italians for the US market is not at all out of reach. The Prima Edizione which was sold out this weekend will come in Bianco, Rosso and Grigio and will wear the Prima Edizione badge. A sequential VIN and badge according to production order will come with each car.

All special edition models will be fitted with a manual transmission, paired to the 1.4l MultiAir four-cylinder engine. Following the sale of this first batch, Fiat will be releasing the regular versions of the model on the US market later this year, with the car to be initially sold in its regular body style. The Cabrio version will be added in 2011.

For the US market, the model will be manufactured in Toluca, Mexico and will be offered with the 1.4l MultiAir engine manufactured in the US.
