GM Loses First Arbitration

While its former brother-into-bankruptcy Chrysler is doing fairly well when it comes to arbitration cases and wins them one after another, GM is off to a not-so-good start. The carmaker lost to Lou LaRiche Chevrolet, of Plymouth, Michigan, after the arbitrator found the dealer to be worthy of a second chance.

“While the undersigned arbitrator gives credence to GM's overall business plan and in fact acknowledges the urgency of many of its actions, the characteristics of this specific dealership are convincing that it has the financial wherewithal and will to succeed and to make a positive contribution to the overall GM dealer network and the public,” the arbitrator said in his decision, cited by Autonews.

GM, who still has hundreds more arbitration hearings scheduled by July 14, didn't comment on the subject, citing confidentiality agreements. Scott LaRiche, executive manager for the revived dealership, couldn't help however expressing his joy.

“After a year of getting kicked in the head every single day, this is such a relief. But right from the beginning, we've always hoped that somewhere, someone was going to do the right thing,"
he told the source.

In the beginning of the year, 168 out of the 2,000 dealers rejected by American manufacturer GM had filed for arbitration. GM sent letters to 1,300 dealers notifying them of the criteria used to target elimination of all their GM franchises by October, as well as 700 letters to partial wind-down stores.
