The first generation is yet to meet the public but it appears that General Motors is already working on the second iteration of the Chevrolet Volt. In fact, it seems that the US-based automaker has found some ways to reduce production costs so all the upgrades will be implemented into the second version of the car.
According to a report by Autocar, General Motors will concentrate on the 1.4-liter gasoline engine, although there are rumors that the parent company could replace it with a newer version specifically optimized for improved mileage.
The first generation Chevrolet Volt, which will go on sale in a few days, will be priced at $41,000, or $33,500 net of full federal income tax credit. What's interesting is that General Motors will also lease the Volt for $350 for 36 months with an initial payment of $2500.
The car will be delivered together with a 120-volt charge cord and the possibility for you to be one of the 4,400 buyers to receive a free 240-volt charging station, including home installation. Future owners will also be assisted by phone or Internet 24/7.
It will be equipped with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine that develops 84 horsepower at 4,800 rpm plus an electric propulsion system that generates 111 kW (drive motor) and 54 kW (generator motor). Performance figures are limited to a maximum speed of 100 mph (160 km/h), with an electric range of 25 to 50 miles, obviously depending on a number of factors. The extended range reaches 350 miles with a fully charged battery and a full tank.
