General Motors is planning to expand Chevrolet’s “LT” small-block V8 engine lineup and has started trademark procedure for the LT5 and LTX names.
Although it may sound simple, it’s actually not. For the moment we don’t know what the LT5 is all about, but GMAuthority claims it may very well lead to a new high-performance version of the C7 Corvette. The LT5 designation was used in the past for the fourth-generation Corvette ZR1 and it was developed by Lotus.
As far as LTX goes, we might have a mystery engine on our hands. Unless it’s a designation registered to host the entire LT engine family, Chevrolet could work on an extreme, range-topping powerplant similar to the current LSX.
But that’s not all. Corvette Forum now suggests that the American company is looking to bring back the LT4, an engine name previously used on the Corvette Grand Sport and the Street Legal Performance-packed (SLP) Pontiac Firebird and Chevrolet Camaro SS. The LT4 could be fitted into the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro for a trim placed above the ZL1.
