General Motors Canada Increases Production

General Motors Canada announced that it will initiate a production output expansion plan in order to satisfy the growing demand for its Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs.

The plan includes the addition of a third shift at the company’s Oshawa Plant, which assembles the Equinox, and the increasing of CAMI Automotive factory's capacity - based in Ingesroll, Ontario - that produces the Equinox and the Terrain.

CAMI’s body shop capacity will see its capacity grow in order to produce and paint more Equinoxes. The assemble-ready bodies will be shipped to the Oshawa site for the final production stage. CAMI will also increase the GMC Terrain production volume.

This plan for CAMI and Oshawa allows us to meet customer demand for hot products while avoiding a potential production over-capacity situation by creatively using our assets and facilities,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. “This innovative approach enables us to ramp up in a timely and cost-effective way and highlights the importance of these plants and communities in our North American plans.

The Oshawa’s third shift will be added in October and should bring back around 600 employees at the site. The plan will re-employ all the laid-off employees from the CAMI plant and will generate around 70 new jobs at the site by August.

This is the latest in a series of very positive growth initiatives and new product mandates for our Canadian facilities,” said Kevin Williams, president of GM Canada. “By the end of this year, we expect to recall all laid-off production employees in Oshawa to support the new Equinox, Regal and Camaro convertible production planned there and, at CAMI, we will even be hiring some new workers – truly great news for the employees, dealers, suppliers and communities affected.
