Few other fictional universes are as beautiful, sinister, violent, and heartbreakingly relatable as the one created by writer-director George Miller in the Mad Max saga. We are now preparing to revisit it once more, so mark your calendars for May 2024.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the first Mad Max-less installment in the Mad Max franchise, picking up the story of Furiosa from predecessor Fury Road and turning it into an origin story. It's the same post-apocalyptic universe but without the main character that first introduced us to it.

The first full-length trailer for Furiosa dropped this week, and it brings (rather sad) confirmation of what the teaser released in December only hinted at: unlike with Fury Road, George Miller is relying more on CGI (computer generated images) in action scenes this time.

In fact, if you'll recall the 2015 release, much attention went to the fact that Miller, a traditional cinematographer by all accounts, had shunned CGI altogether in favor of practical effects. In other words, all those spectacular car chases and explosions were recreated and filmed in real life and made for much more compelling – and convincing – storytelling.

Not so with Furiosa, if this new trailer is any indication. The pace is just as wild as with its predecessor, and you might even recognize some of the rigs from that one (specifically Furiosa's massive tanker rig), but certain scenes have that eerie, fake quality of questionable CGI. It's more obvious towards the end when Furiosa brings down what looks like a tower belonging to Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth in his most deranged outing to date).

As far as vehicular action, though, the trailer doesn't disappoint. We get good looks at the Warboys and their rigs, at Dementus and his Biker Horde, at Dementus' chariot-inspired trike, and even a couple of shots at Immortan Joe, who has already taken Furiosa in and may even be assisting her in the hunt for Dementus. We get chases and explosions, and blood-pumping choreography, the kind only Miller can pull off.

The setting of the new film is 45 years after the collapse of humanity and years after Furiosa was taken from her home in the Green Place of Many Mothers. She is determined to seek revenge for the destruction of her home and family and to find her way back to her home, even if that means setting the entire world on fire.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opens in theaters on May 24, 2024, and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular character, with appearances by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and Nathan Joe. Lachy Hulme takes over in the iconic role of Immortan Joe.

In addition to less practical effects, this trailer also lacks that extra oomph brought on by a character like the Coma-Doof Warrior, playing his guitar while strapped on bungee chords. But it's still pretty awesome, no?
