Driver Matt Hagan is uninjured after a massive engine explosion tears his car to shreds. The incident took place in the qualifying round of the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals held at the Zmax Dragway.
The methanol-fueled 8000 hp engine blew up as Matt was doing over 415 km/h (260 mph), but luckily for him only the body shell disintegrated with the safety cell shielding him from the blast. The culprit for the explosion has to be the highly volatile fuel used to give dragsters their fierce pace, while at the same time makes them ticking time-bombs.
This, however, is part of the appeal of drag-racing. Everything happens very quickly, the speeds are so high that when the inevitable happens the driver leaves the wreckage unscathed, thanks to the high level of safety that these cars offer, with the crowds cheering him in the background.
