This car isn't the first Mercedes to drive all by itself. In 1995, an S-Class went on the autobahn and through a number of countries pretty much without driver intervention. But the car they brought to Frankfurt this year is different.
The S500 Intelligent Drive is close to the technology already installed on the new S-Class. The route chose by Daimler to test the car not only has city and country roads, but is also packed with historic significance. It's the one picked 125 years ago by Bertha Benz: Mannheim to Pforzheim.
We don't want to sell the Intelligent Drive system short. It manages to identify every traffic light in all weather conditions, read the road 10 times a second, predict the movement of cars in traffic and so much more.
It's still a project, not ready to be mass produced, but you can tell Mercedes is committed and will get it done. And the simple fact of the matter is, both inside and out, it's every bit the luxury car that it's supposed to be.
