FOTA Agrees to New Point System for 2010

The Formula One teams are really decided to bring a dramatic change in the current point-awarding system in the series, especially with the boost in cars on the 2010 starting grid. As 6 more cars will eventually make the field in the upcoming season, there is also the need to award points to more race finishers consequently. With only 8 drivers being awarded points at the finish line under the current format, the initial discussions were held on the possibility of tweaking the rules towards a MotoGP-style system. As we've reported soon after the 2009 season ended, the new system was supposed to be 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1, meaning the top 10 drivers would make the scoreboard next season. Although some recent reports have suggested that the pole sitter or the driver who scores the fastest lap during the race will also be eligible for scoring championship points, the Sporting Working Group (from within the Formula One Teams Association) met on Friday and allegedly agreed to the first few changes on the points' format. According to British publication Autosport, the teams decided that the point-difference between the first two finishers will have to be bigger than only 5 points. Consequently, the new point system will likely be 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.
While other changes to the point-scoring system are yet to be unveiled (if any), the FOTA has yet to present their new rulebook to the FIA's World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) next month, for the final approval. However, with all the teams already in favor of the new system, the ruling body will most definitely agree on it during their next meeting.
