Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of global product development, said that as much as a quarter of all Fords sold in ten year’s time could be either electric models or hybrids. Kuzak, blue oval CEO Alan Mulally and other Ford execs all agree with this view, saying that sales of electric-drive models are set to start in the near future.
Furthermore, in just 4 year’s time, Ford plans for hybrid-electric, electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to account for 2 to 5 percent of its global sales volume, according to a recent Automotive News article. By 2020, the figure could rise to between 10 and 25 percent, with hybrids taking the lion’s share of the results.
“The real step that needs to be taken on electrification is to make electrified vehicles affordable. One way to make them affordable is to drive volume. That's really the whole basis of our strategy. Our next generation of hybrids will be at an even lower cost,” Kuzak said.
A total of three green Fords will be offered by the company by 2012, one of which will be the Focus Electric, which Mulally showed today. All hybrid-electric, electric and plug-in hybrid sporting the blue oval in 2012 will be on compact or mid-sized platforms, as this is the most substantial global market.
The Focus Electric is powered by 100-kilowatt electric motor with a 23-kWh battery, capable of producing 123 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque at its peak. Ford says its EV can reach a top speed of 84 miles per hour.
