Starting 2013, the year when the NASCAR sanctioning body and participant car makers will begin replacing the current car design for the series, Ford will be replacing the current Sprint racer, the Fusion, with all the muscles of the Camaro. Provided, of course, NASCAR finds the car to be at the same levels, competitively speaking, as the models which will be fielded by rivals Dodge, GM and Toyota.
"We have declared our interest to NASCAR that we would like to see the Mustang in Cup," Jamie Allison, director of Ford's North American Motorsports program was quoted as saying by ESPN. "We are driving to make sure that the car we race is more consistent and more in context with the cars we sell. They have to look like the cars we sell."
As NASCAR already announced, the future Sprint racers, including the Mustang, will have to meet several criteria to be able to take part in the racing season. One of the most important, dictated by the need for the cars to be recognizable, will be the resemblance the racers will have to the series versions of the cars.
For the next two years, Ford will continue to race the Fusion in the Sprint Cup. Until then, we wait for the reply of the other two American players in the series. Anyone fancy the Camaro in the Sprint?
