With Independence Day coming up this weekend, there’s no doubt there will be numerous drab green Jeeps and desert tan HMMMVs driving in parades all across the country. Despite the fact that these vehicles have dominated the automotive landscape in the American armed forces for most of the last century, though, Ford is happy to report that when our soldiers and veterans come home, they are more likely to drive a Ford product.
In a recent analysis of vehicle purchases by 19.3 million households of military personnel (active duty, veteran or retired), IHS Automotive found that out 920,000 new vehicle registrations, data show that three of the top 10 vehicles that were purchased were Ford products. The most common vehicle purchased by military families is the Ford F-150, which isn’t all that surprising since it has also been the top-selling vehicle in the U.S. for the last three decades.

Third on the list, and the top overall utility vehicle, was the Ford Escape. The Escape also proved to be the most popular vehicle for military families living in the Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia areas. Finally, the Ford Fusion ranked ninth on the list

It probably isn’t by chance that the three of the most popular vehicles purchased by military personnel were Ford products either. According to Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president of Global Marketing, Sales, Service and Lincoln:

“Ford has a long history of supporting active-duty military personnel and veterans, and it is an honor American military families buy Ford more than any other brand.”

This support includes the donation of more than $8 million to veterans organizations (including the National World War II Memorial) since 1974, the employment of more than 5,900 veterans and “hundreds of active duty military personnel and a company-supported resource group called Ford Veterans Network Group, which hosts activities for veterans and military personnel employed by Ford.
