Ford Only Sells 38 Focus EVs in July

It seems that there is a serious problem with the pure-EV market. Not only are the sales of the Nissan Leaf falling quite abruptly, but so too are the the sales of Ford’s all-electric Focus, which only managed to sell 38 units last month, despite being a very promising and very understated EV offering.
This represents a drop of more than 60%, when comparing the figure to June’s 89 cars sold. This brings the total number of Focus EVs sold so far up to a not-particularly-impressive 135 units in total. Also, according to official figures, Ford has built a total of 884 cars which they are waiting to sell, and of those, only 121 were assembled in July.

Something needs to be done, otherwise manufacturers will take this as an excuse to not make EVs. Everybody seemed so excited and eager to get their hands on an EV, and now that manufacturers have finally brought them out, albeit at a rather high price (the Focus starts at $39,200 before state and federal incentives), people are not flooding the showrooms.

It is, according to insideevs.com Ford’s fault, as they are not really interested in making this car a success, but more of a “CARB (California Air Resources Board) compliance car”. We also say that the fact that it only comes with a very small, 23 kWh battery pack, which only takes the car 76 miles (122 km) before running out also has something to do with its poor sales record. If Ford truly wanted to make this a success, they would have given it a much bigger battery pack - but they didn’t.
