Technology opens up a lot of great opportunities that only need somebody to spot them and capitalize on them. This latest Ford idea is a great example of what the internet and digital billboards can do when used together smartly.
If questioned about what we would have liked to be in a parallel universe, a lot of us would most likely say “artist.” That’s probably down to the care-free lifestyle these people usually project, or it’s maybe because we’d all like to leave something behind and we feel “artist” is less pretentious than “Nobel laureate” or “discoverer of the cure for cancer.”

Whatever the case, given the chance of becoming an “artist,” we’ll instantly jump on it. In that case, head over to www.FordByDesign.com and let your inner Da Vinci loose, but not before you read the rest of this text.

As part of its new By Design campaign, Ford is letting all users design the company’s billboards that will be displayed in high-traffic locations around the country like Times Square or San Francisco Bay Bridge. But before you start flexing your creative muscles, you should know that your freedom of expression is slightly limited.

OK, “slightly” is a euphemism, but the interactive app that’s also available on mobile devices is a nice way to kill some time while also making sure your name gets displayed in some of the most iconic places in the USA. The cities where Ford has these digital billboards installed are New York, Washington DC, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

The website lets you choose from a number of Ford models (let’s face it, we’ll all go for either the Mustang or the Focus RS) and three types of interactive backgrounds, each with a certain number of colors. The resulting “pieces of art” won’t be all that different, so having the name shown is one of the corners is useful in identifying your creation.

Not that you will have to freeze your ass outside in front of the billboard waiting for your ad to show. Nope, this is where technology kicks in once again and makes sure that you will get a “selfie” of your art from a camera opposite the billboard.

Now go be an artist.
