Oakwood’s “Healthy Hearts for Women” was created in 2005 through a $1 million donation made by Ford’s charity division, Ford Motor Company Fund. With the support of the second donation, the research study will reach a 100 percent completion percent by 2012.

The study’s aim is to see the effectiveness of a personal health coaching, intensive risk factor reduction and behavior modification program. The research hopes that the aforementioned measures will be successful in reducing the risk of heart disease among woman, as this is one of the leading cause of American females.
The project includes 400 female subjects who have agreed to practice a set of preventive measures over a five-year period, including eliminating tobacco, dietary changes, exercise, cholesterol & blood pressure monitoring and others. All the participants are considered to have a moderate to high risk of heart disease.
"While personalized coaching is not a new technique, personalized health coaching as a part of one's prescription for improved health is what we're focusing on in the study," said Carla Schneider, Personal Cardiac Coach, Oakwood Healthcare System. "Plus, the five-year time span that we've attached to this particular intervention is certainly unique to the study."
