Budged cars are big business, especially for automaker that want a global presence. Renault has managed to turn a struggling Romanian car brand into a success story, while their partner Nissan is going to revived the Datsun brand.
Ford is also considering budget cars, it looks like, but not a standalone brand like Renault’s Dacia. The affordable model could use the same platform as the Fiesta, but cost less than the popular B-segment hatch.
"We are looking around the world at opportunities to offer a car priced below the Fiesta," Ford CEO Alan Mulally told Automotive News Europe on the sidelines of the “Go Further” event in Amsterdam.
Ford already offers a model smaller than the Fiesta, the Ka, but that is built on a Fiat platform that’s to small. The Fiesta will have a refreshed sedan version within the next year, but that hasn’t been designed with budget buyers in mind.
"We do not have a firm plan at the moment [for a global sub-B model], but clearly being competitive in every market segment is important," Mulally said.
