This is a piece of news that a few years ago would have seemed extremely far-fetched - a large family saloon, being powered by a 1.0-liter engine. However, Ford have just confirmed that the upcoming Ford Mondeo will be powered the firm’s appreciated small displacement EcoBoost engine, despite the fact that it has actually grown in size over its predecessor.
This will be a historic first for the firm, and the segment for that matter, and we are very curious as to how the finished product will behave. We say that with 125 hp and decent torque, the small engine will give the Fusion-based Mondeo brisk performance, on par with what such cars used to get out of 1.8- and 2.0-liter units in the past, but with far smaller fuel bills - it actually replaces the naturally-aspirated 1.6-liter engine that used to power the base car, yet offers superior performance.

The decision was confirmed at the Go Further event, held by Ford in the Netherlands. Barb Samardzich, VP of Product Development of Ford of Europe said that "Today’s smartest technology offers customers more from less [. . .] This is as true of engines as it is of computers and smartphones, and by equipping the all-new Mondeo in Europe with our acclaimed 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine we are delivering cutting-edge technology that delivers a very real and tangible customer benefit."
