Ford looked at the brand new 2014 Chevy Silverado and immediately set out to outdo it with its own F-150. The production version of Ford’s best-seller pickup is still so way from being replaced, but this preview concept shows what sort of direction we can expect from them.
The styling is bold and imposing, something we’ve come to expect from the Blue Oval brand in the past few years. While the automaker won’t admit there’s a connection between the Atlas Concept and the F-150, the resemblance is so obvious we’d go as far as to call it an evolution in design.
Ford was really thinking ‘eco’ when the designed the Atlas. It features Active Grille and Wheel Shutters, much like you’d find on a Ford Focus, but much cooler. They close at speed, reducing the drag coefficient of the truck and cutting fuel consumption. To this green end, it also has running boards that stay hidden until you need them and a front spoiler that reduces underbody drag.
“The Ford Atlas Concept previews the innovations that will transform what people expect from their pickup,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “With 36 years as America’s best-selling pickup, we are absolutely committed to setting the agenda in the truck market.”
The interior is futuristic without being farfetched. The gear selector looks like it belongs on a sportscar, and the dashboard layout looks practical and simple.
“We wanted the concept to reflect how Ford trucks help customers in both their worlds – professionally and personally,” said J Mays, Ford group vice president and chief creative officer. “Every surface and feature in the vehicle has been crafted for purpose and capability while retaining an unmistakable Built Ford Tough look.”
