Ford Adds a 1.6 EcoBoost to the UK Mondeo Range

Subsequent to the release of the facelifted Ford Mondeo in UK, the blue oval promised that it will introduce a new 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. Details of the said engine emerged recently, with the company's recent wave of engine updates aiming for more power and less fuel consumption.

The power unit is a combination of modern technologies, including turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable cam timing, none of which were present in Ford's older engine line-up.

According to Ford, the new 1.6 EcoBoost sits in the same range as the 2.0 liter TDCi diesel, in terms of power, consumption and taxation. The new turbocharged power plant replaces the naturally aspirated 2.0 liter, 145 hp Zetec engine and is 10% more powerful, with a peak power of 160 hp. It also improves the range of the car by an extra 100 miles or 160 km, returning 41.5 UK mpg combined cycle (34.5 US mpg or 6.81 liters per 100 km).

"Ford's newest Mondeo has an exterior look and standard of interior well suited to the executive car park. We've added powertrains which support the lower carbon economy we now live in. The efficient 1.6 EcoBoost in Mondeo is a sporty alternative for petrol advocates who switched to diesel in order to pay less tax," said Kevin Griffin, fleet director at Ford of Britain.

Soon enough, the release of the new 1.6 EcoBoost will be followed by the addition of a 1.6 TDCi engine to the Mondeo range, producing 115 hp, while the 1.6 EcoBoost will also be added to the S-MAX and Galaxy ranges.

In the UK, pricing for the Mondeo 1.6 Ecoboost starts from £18,945 (about US $30,500 or EUR 22,350), with all taxes and fees included.
