Next Generation Audi A3 Range to Include Saloon Model

Audi is planning to expand the A3 range, with the move scheduled to come at the same time with the introduction of a new generation of the compact. The company has decided that it will build a saloon incarnation of the A3, as autocar reports.

The vehicle, which is expected to set new premium standards in its segment, will come to the market in 2013, joining the three- and the five-door hatchbacks, as well as the cabrio version of the A3’s next generation.

The vehicle will use Audi’s new design identity and will measure 4.51 meters (inches) in length, being shorter that the Volkswagen Jetta. The A3 sedan will be underpinned by the VW MQB modular platform, using a front strut and rear multilink suspension setup and being available with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.

One of the top assets of the upcoming models will be its engine range. Belonging to the VW Group, the car will borrow a multitude of engines that have been optimized to offer a high level of efficiency. The list of available powerplants will start with a turbocharged 1.4 liter TSI unit and will be topped by the TT RS’s 2.5 liter, five-cylinder turbocharged engine - this will be used to power the RS3 hot hatch.

Diesel-lovers will be able to choose between 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter units, while eco-fans will be offered a hybrid model that will use a 1.4 liter TSI unit in conjunction with an electric unit, as well as a lithium-ion battery pack that should offer a satisfying driving range.
