Flake Concept Takes Active Systems to the Extreme

The need of achieving a high degree of aerodynamics when designing a supercar is revealed at its peek with by new Da Feng’s Flake Concept. When seeing the concept in action makes us think about the Transformers series.

Flake concept was envisioned to push the limits of flexibility and active systems to their limits. Most of the cars are fitted with active body parts that help assist in changes in aerodynamics while the cars are reaching higher speeds. An interesting feature is that the concept comes with 250 active body panels controlled by mini solenoids pulling carbon nano tube wires.

The goal of the Bumblebee-like capabilities of the concept is that the car can change its shape at different speeds to get the best aerodynamics. The active body can assist the driver in braking, cornering and actively changing downforce, at the same time being able to collect solar energy from the sun.

“When traveling at speed, the car will contract to its closed position to help control airflow, and when under braking or turning, the flakes will spring open to dynamically adjust downforce. The open flakes will also allow the car to lean into the corner for better handling,” Da Feng was quoted as saying by wired.com.
