First Ever Use of OnStar Stolen Vehicle Shutdown: It Works

GM proudly announced today its new OnStar Stolen Vehicle Slowdown system (SVS) was put through its very first real life test on Sunday, as a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe has been carjacked at at gunpoint. The conclusion of this rather unfortunate event: SVS works.

On Sunday, California resident Jose Ruiz got his car and belongings stolen at gunpoint. After managing to report the assault to a police officer, Ruiz told him the car is equipped with OnStar SVS. The officer notified OnStar advisors who in turn initiated the stolen vehicle recovery service and notified the police of the car's whereabouts.

The whole story lasted for 16 minutes, at the end of which the car was recovered and the suspect apprehended.

While this was the first time that we’ve used the Stolen Vehicle Slowdown service, we have used OnStar in several other cases to help locate and recover stolen vehicles. It’s a valuable tool for our agency,” Sergeant Steven Phillips from the Visalia Police Department said.

"In this case, it helped us not only safely recover a vehicle for a local citizen, but also prevented a dangerous high-speed chase and allowed us to quickly apprehend a suspect. It’s a win for everyone.

As for Ruiz, he of course was unable to hide his satisfaction about getting a subscription to OnStar.

As soon as he took my car, the first thing I thought of was to call OnStar because I knew they could get it back,” Ruiz said. “It was a frightening situation, but I know it could have been a lot worse. I’m very grateful that OnStar was there for me.
