Fiat Toro’s First Official Image Hits the Internet, It Still Looks Too Good for a Pickup

We have a lot to be thankful for to the South American market in terms of pickups, and the first example that comes into mind is the Volkswagen Amarok.
It’s true, mentioning anything related to Volkswagen these days is like talking about Satan at the Church, but the Wolfsburg pickup really is a great machine, diesel engines and all. Well, you can now add another one to the list, even though there’s no info on whether the Toro will make it out of the South American market in the near future.

Based strictly on its looks, we think it should. It wouldn’t make too much sense in North America due to its smallish size, but in Europe, it could prove a hit among those who consider buying a pickup but are put off by its cumbersomeness.

It also wouldn’t have all that many competitors over there - you could actually say that it wouldn’t have any direct competition. However, Fiat is positioning the Toro as a mix between a pickup and an SUV, so it could still step on somebody’s toes in what is one of the most crowded segments at the moment.

And Fiat isn’t stretching it by any means, since the Toro is based on the well-received Jeep Renegade SUV. The Fiat Toro is said to carry up to 2,200 lbs (1,000 kg) while still having room for five. With (optional) all-wheel-drive transmission, the Toro seems to offer everything an adventurer would need. On the other hand, apart from a decently sized bed, that also goes for the Jeep Renegade, so this one is up to the adventurer.

Some information regarding the Toro’s engine lineup has transpired, and it seems like it will be using a 1.8 E-Torq Flex engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission for the 2WD version. There is also a diesel setup in the form of the 2.0 Multijet that comes with a six-speed manual for either 4WD or 2WD, or a nine-speed automatic restricted to 4WD.

Fiat’s claim that the Toro is a cross between a pickup and an SUV may sound weird, but read the full list of options and it will start to make sense. It includes the latest Uconnect entertainment system available, partial leather upholstery, GPS navigation, rearview camera, xenon lights, an electric sunroof, and wheels up to 18-inches in size.

Full details on the new car will be released by Fiat shortly, and we’ll be able to tell you more about it then, so stay tuned.
