One of the biggest advantages of electric vehicles is the fact that nature can recharge them for free if you have access to a solar panel array or wind mill. In San Diego at least, you can do that as Fiat just mounted a solar charging station in their parking lot.
Kearny Mesa Fiat just finished installing a new solar charging station that allows Fiat 500e drivers to get off the grid, be green and recharge their batteries for free.

"I mean there's no carbon footprint for these solar charging stations. All solar, so it's a very eco-friendly solution, especially being in San Diego having that much sunshine here," Kearny Mesa Fiat President and CEO Javier Soriano told CBS8.

The contraption built by Envision Solar, is called the EV ARC and stands for electronic vehicle autonomous renewable charger. It occupies one parking space and can be moved from place to place using a pickup truck.

Two cars can be recharged at the same time and by following the sun, the array can generate around 16 kW hr per day, which are stored in its on-board batteries.

It even comes with an outdoor digital advertising screen to keep users informed about the dealership’s offers. Which just gave us an idea - why can’t we just fit every one of those big billboards with solar panels to charge EVs and create a win-win situation? Watch some ads, but charge your car for free.
