Originally known for its tricked out Land Rover Defenders and Chevy Thriftmaster pickup trucks, Icon is now planning to do an outlandish car that seems to be penned by Brunel and Jules Verne. Baptized Helios (Greek for sun), the retro-futuristic vehicle will make use of the Tesla Model X's state-of-the-art tech.
The California-based boutique carmaker tells that what you can see in sketch gallery below is the car in question. A 1937 Ford Sedan Delivery seems to have been the main inspiration for the front grille design, while those curvaceous front fenders and gorgeous rear window have a little bit of Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic to them. Just look at it and its riveted aluminum magnificence. It's hard not to fall in love with such a wonderful automotive design.
Design sketches hint that the interior will have that early 20th century automobile feel to it, with lots of leather throughout the cabin, an instrument cluster finished in aluminum and adorned with old school analogue gauges, as well as seating for up to five passengers. Speaking to Jalopnik, Icon founder Jonathan Ward told that "this project is currently only a concept, but one that I will move mountains to figure out how to get built. In keeping with the founding premise at Icon, of fusing vintage design with the best modern drive experience and technology, I can think of no better platform to build this on than the Tesla."
And that Tesla is the upcoming Model X. The Helios would borrow the all-electric crossover's chassis, all-wheel drive system, two electric motors and battery pack, which is believed to offer a 380-mile range. Unfortunately for people that might be interested in this bespoke vehicle, the Helios is currently categorized as a low-priority project. Development of the car will take at least 2 years from sketch to pre-production vehicle, so here's hope that this retro-futuristic madness will see fruition soon enough.
