You can call the Italians what you like, but not inconsistent. Fiat have stuck with the much criticized TwinAir two-cylinder engine and have found ways to make it better.
The little 0.9-liter now develops 105 PS. That's 52.5 PS per cylinder. If we're not mistaken, the first applications were on Alfa models announced earlier this year, but now the smallest car in Fiat's arsenal, the 500, is getting it as well.

The official statement came three days ago straight from Italy and says the new 0.9 TwinAir with 105 PS is available in the country exclusively with the Lounge, S and GQ trim levels of the 500 saloon and 500C convertible.

They say that although this model delivers great fuel economy, it doesn't compromise when it comes to performance. Let's see if they're right. 0 to 100 km/h takes exactly 10 seconds, while the top speed is 188 km/h. That's about the same as a Fiesta EcoBoost or a VW Polo 1.2 TSI 105.

Fuel consumption is only 4.2 l/100km, at least according to the press release, while CO2 emissions of 99 g/km mean low taxes.

Prices in Italy will start at €16.181, which isn't exactly cheap. But then these powerful downsized engines never are. We found the 500C brochure for October and discovered the GQ model with this engine is €21,525, which we think you'll agree is a lot.
