The Alfa Romeo MiTo has been around for three years now, and its range of engines has been one of its strong points, along with the styling. It featured Fiat-sourced powerplants no bigger than 1.6-liters, all of which were very economical, with the maximum combined fuel consumption being 6.0l/100km (47 mpg), while 1.3-liter diesel (with start/stop) has an official average figure 3.5l/100km (81 mpg) - lowest in the range.
Now, though, British petrol engine fans who need even more economy than the 1.4-liter lump could provide, can now rejoice, as Alfa is bringing the 875cc TwinAir engine to the UK. The powerplant has already received positive reviews under the bonnet of the Fiat 500 and Punto, so its transition to Alfa Romeo is a natural and predictable one.

Powering the MiTo, the 85 hp engine emits under 100 g/km of CO2 and is good for a 4.2 l/100km (67.3 mpg) combined figure. The engine is coupled to a six-cog manual box and thanks to the car’s generous torque figure (for a sub-one liter engine) of 145 Nm (106 lb-ft), it should make light work of the first five gears through town and gets to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 12.5 seconds.

The car is available in two trim levels, called Sprint and Distinctive, priced at £14,150 and £15,350 respectively. The former gives you, aside from the usual gadgets, 16-inch alloys, cruise control, fog lights, manual climate control, while the Distinctive trim adds 17-inch wheels, red Brembo calipers, rear parking sensors and chrome/aluminium exterior trim detailing. It is now also available with a new paint job called ‘Ametista Black’ and also features a revamped interior.
