Ferrari: Massa Needs Miracle to Win Title

Ferrari are in pole position for clinching back-to-back titles in Formula 1 following their constructors' crown last year. Just like last year though, the Scuderia was unable to put one of his drivers in pole for a championship title too. Felipe Massa is trailing McLaren's Lewis Hamilton by 7 points in the drivers' classification and needs something close to a miracle on Sunday to win his first F1 title of career.

“In order for us to win the title, something extraordinary must happen. But to this point we have already seen much more extraordinary things than that. For our standards we have made an unacceptable level of mistakes, and paid for them dearly,” said Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali in an interview for Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

What the Ferrari official is referring to when talking about these mistake are the unfortunate incidents in the Hungarian Grand Prix and in Singapore. Massa was one lap from winning the race at Hungaroring – after dominating the race from start to almost-finish – when his engine blew up and forced him out of the race.

Also, while leading the Singapore Grand Prix, a malfunction in Ferrari's pit stop system caused Massa to leave the pits earlier than expected and with the fuel hose still attached to his car. He eventually finished the race outside the Top 8 and lost a good opportunity to get closer to Hamilton in the standings.

Nevertheless, Massa avoided to point any fingers and insisted that his team's mistakes were only part of the game this season: “We are a team. Everyone has the right to make mistakes. This is how sports work. Our team works hard day and night to be 100 per cent ready, but sometimes things don't go as planned.”
