As reported earlier today, it was Roberto Calderoli of Italy's Northern League party – also member of the Government headed by Silvio Berlusconi – who asked Di Montezemolo to resign from his position as Ferrari boss, following the “disgraceful” race in Abu Dhabi.
Being that the Northern League party is not exactly a friend – ideologically speaking, of course – of Di Montezemolo, the Ferrari boss knew where the attacks came from and fend it off in style.
“For all of us it's a difficult day, the night hasn't lessened the bitter taste after the sad end to an extraordinary season,” said Di Montezemolo. “We're sorry to see that there are some politicians on the outside who are ready to push for the guillotine when things go badly.”
“We don't understand anyone who revels in self-defeatism, who sinks into the culture of 'everything's gone wrong, we have to start all over again'. They are vices that are very Italian, that we must learn to shake off.”
Additionally, he urged the Scuderia to recover from the 2010 season which, despite its failure to provide a world title, brought Ferrari back to winning ways. After a disastrous campaign in 2009, Ferrari now once again fought for a title until the last round, which is more than most had expected throughout the recently ended campaign.
“In sport, we remember the margin between victory and defeat is always very slim. You have to know how to accept losing just as you have to enjoy your successes with restraint,” concluded Di Montezemolo.
