Ferrari Add Aerobatics Commander to Strategy Team

Ferrari's strategy mistake in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year seems to have haunted the Maranello officials throughout the winter, as some of the most important staff moves made by the Scuderia in the last few months have had a direct influence on that particular aspect of their organization.

After Chris Dyer had been relocated from his former position as race engineer, and following the appointment of Red Bull's former chief strategist Neil Martin, Ferrari have confirmed yet another move aimed at improving communication between its engineers during Grand Prix weekends.

Former Frecce Tricolori (Italian national aircraft aerobatic team) commander Massimo Tammaro has been hired by the Scuderia for the 2011 campaign, and will become an important presence on the Ferrari pitwall during race weekends.

I'm passionate about planes and I knew Tammaro,” confirmed Ferrari's team boss Stefano Domenicali for Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport. “Since he left Frecce Tricolori and wanted to pursue a different career, I thought interesting to have at our disposal his organisational knowledge and his military experience on communication codes.”

Recently, almost every voice in the paddock has agreed that race strategy and flexibility in pitstop decisions will become key elements of Formula 1 through 2011, a year during which the multitude of changes introduced by the FIA – highly degradable tires, adjustable rear wing, KERS – will make the sport as unpredictable as it could get.

However, referring to Dyer's relocation within the Maranello organization, Domenicali insisted the move was not the reflection of what happened in Abu Dhabi last season.

The fact that he is not in Gestione Sportiva anymore but is in the industrial department is not tied to that [the Abu Dhabi events], but is down to internal balances that had to be evaluated. Now Dyer works with the GTs; in the future he'll have to decide whether to stay there or to come back to racing,” he concluded.
