Best Car Will Win in 2011 - Alonso

You can throw in all the degradable tires you want, and choose all the different strategies you wish to choose, but at the end of the day it will still be the best car of the 2011 season that will take the title. And that's not the result of some fruitful introspection we here at autoevolution have made recently, but the argument of a two-time world champion who goes around by the name Fernando Alonso.

According to the Spanish driver, the best car of the year will emerge on top of the classification in the end, despite the multiple other factors thrown in by the FIA for the 2011 campaign.

Tires who wear out incredibly fast will have a quick impact on race strategies, and these schemes will be different from driver to driver, depending on the way he takes care (or not) of his rubber. So the new F1 season will not be only about performance, but the way each knows how to enhance it and adapt to the new requirements of the game.

“As usual in F1, the quickest or best car will win the championship in the end,” said Alonso, making it clear that championship-caliber teams should not look for excuses at the end of the season in case they fail in their title bid.

“Strategy is important, maybe one or two races will be decided by a very good strategy or someone very quick can have a mistake in a strategy point of view and lose that victory. But over 20 races or 19 races you can make mistakes one time in strategy or you can do a very good strategy one time but not every race, so in the end the most important thing will be to have the quickest car and we are working for that.”

Additionally, he emphasized the fact that each racer will have to adapt his style to the new Pirelli tires, and they way the compounds behave in different weekends (track-dependent).

“It is a difficult call and a difficult judgement that we will need to make. We will need to be very open and very flexible in every race,” he added.
