What makes a family wagon stand out from the overcrowded environment in which it dwells? Specific beauty marks borrowed from the athletic side of the family and a few upgrades to wheels and brakes. That’s what BMW thinks, and the company is now offering M Performance styling packages and parts for the recently launched 5 Series Touring models.
Three months ago, BMW announced their new version of the 5 Series station wagon – the ‘Touring,’ as per official nomenclature from the Bavarian Motor Works. It was about high time they released the cosmetic optional extras for the premium family-and-luggage hauler. Everyone, this is the BMW M Performance Parts package offer.

Styling of the new BMW wagon might not appease everyone’s taste. Still, the Germans are always ready to put lipstick on all their products because what’s wrong with a little beautification gimmick? In the 5 Series Touring’s case, it has to do with aerodynamics, interior, and suspension upgrades. The BMW M Performance Parts appearance set is dedicated to the new Touring variants – combustion and all-electric – equipped with the M Sport Package or M Sport Package Pro.

The three-piece M Performance Carbon front splitter generates extra downforce, and it can be ordered in high-gloss black on the left and right. To make it even more ‘doing 100 mph even when standing still,’ the stylists came up with accent stripes in Frozen Black, digitally printed in matt anthracite with ‘M Performance’ lettering. To make the bulky wagon more streamlined-looking, a pair of curved lines in matt grey below the doors ‘emphasize the sporty elegance and accentuate the shoulder area along the entire length of the vehicle.’ Made of road-wash-resistant film, the decals are bespoke to the styling of the BMW 5 Series Touring and the BMW i5 Touring (the latter is the electric version).

If the subtle stickers aren’t in-your-face enough, there’s the M Carbon mirror housing and the M Performance Aramid antenna cover (a little fin on the roof, just in front of the hatch door). Unlike Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), Aramid-Reinforced Plastic has the advantage of letting radio waves pass through it – hence, its application over the antenna.

Electromagnetic reception might not seem necessary on the rear diffuser, but the Bavarians chose the same Aramid to cleave this aerodynamic element for one specific reason. Apart from guiding air streams from underneath the car, the element has a second functional use, enabling the touchless opening and closing of the luggage compartment. The sensor is motion-actuated, and carbon fiber isn’t as permeable to electromagnetic fields as Aramid.

The occupants might want to gaze at the gleaming M Performance details inside the cockpit, like M Performance lettering on the door sills (aluminum trims are also available), floor mats with contrasting stitching, and a tricolor seam in the BMW M theme. Then there’s the key case – made from Alcantara and high-quality leather crafted to mimic carbon fiber.

Setting aside the beauty marks, the M Performance light alloy wheels for the new BMW 5 Series Touring and its battery-electric brother, the i5 Touring, are conceived with sporty driving in mind. They also come in summer and winter wheels-and-tires sets (19, 20, or 21 inches in diameter, except for the cold season sets that only come in 19- and 20-inch sizes).

To pair with the eye-catching wheel sets, 20-inch M Performance brakes sport six-piston red-painted aluminum fixed calipers at the front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear. Internally ventilated and perforated M Performance lightweight brake discs may seem overkill since no go-fast parts imbue the Touring twins. However, with the dual-motor i5 M60 already carrying 442 kW (593 hp/ 601 PS) and 605 lb-ft (850 Nm), there’s no such thing as too much stopping power.
