For decades people have been content with seeing others come up with incredible (or at times less so) hot rod builds. Some of those watching might have had the talent to put something together on their own but possibly lacked the patience or skill to source the parts needed to make their ideas a reality. Luckily, now there are kits to get one started on a hot rod project.
Working under the motto “Built, not bought,” a garage from Massachusetts called Factory Five set out to make each and every one of us a hot rod builder while also giving the finished product the sports car performance people usually expect from these things.
So enter the Factory Five kits, first shown as a complete Ford build at the 2008 SEMA. There are two such kits on offer, plus a complete hot rod, and we’ll detail them over the following days as part of our Ford Month coverage.
First up is, of course, the Stage 1 kit. Simply put, this is the package that gets you started on making your own hot rod by providing you with the chassis and suspension parts in exchange for $9,990.
Stage 1 comprises a complete jig-welded tube frame, aluminum panels for the cockpit, trunk, and engine bay, complete suspension up front with KONI shocks, and 4-link or 3-link suspension at the rear, also running KONI shock absorbers.
Also thrown into the mix are the complete brake, steering, and fuel systems, accompanied by the cooling hardware and driveshaft. There are three driveshafts to choose from, and they are capable of accommodating both Ford and GM powerplants. The engine itself is, of course, not part of the deal, but it can be literally anything: Ford 4.6-liter, 5.0-liter Coyote, or Chevrolet SB and LS.
All these things (you can check out the entire list of Stage 1 parts here) need assembly, and a manual showing you how to do that is of course offered.
