Now that is quite the escalade off this whole ALS ice bucket challenge. In less than two weeks the silly joke that was shared on social media to raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disorder managed to get almost everybody involved. From Millionaires like Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates, to Toyota CCO and now even Formula 1 racers.
It was a matter of days until this whole ALS challenge story reached the racing track and we’re happy it did so fast. Red Bull F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo took on the Ice Bucket Challenge with Lewis Hamilton among his nominations, yesterday. Considering every person needs to answer the challenge in less than 24 hours, of course Mercedes AMG’s Formula 1 racer Lewis Hamilton got soaked.

Anything original about the way racers do the ALS Challenge, you ask? Well, for us petrol heads, it looks almost like a racing pit stop these fellows do every time they’re on the track: fast, efficient and with the help of the team. There is one little detail that stood up about Hamilton’s challenge and it’s about his nominations. Even though he has been in a on-again off-again relationship with singer Nicole Scherzinger since 2007, for some reason Hamilton nominated Naomi Campbell.

As to the ALS, well you’ll want to know these unique and funny campaign did actually work. According to New York Times, donations to the A.L.S. Association, a Washington-based nonprofit that funds global research to find treatments and a cure for the disease, have surged since the challenge started trending in late July. The group announced on Thursday morning that it had received $41,8 million in donations from July 29 until August 21.

More than 739,000 new donors have given money to the association, which means more than double the $19.4 million in total contributions the association received during the year that ended January 31, 2013, according to a filing with the Internal Revenue Service, quoted by the daily newspaper.
