If there's one controversial character to ever get behind major projects at BMW, it's Chris Bangle. He was the one responsible for the E60 5 Series and the E65 7 Series' looks, back in the early 2000s.
Over the years, his styling became known as the Bangle Butt, a term used to describe a more out of the box approach towards BMW's design lines. Some people liked what he did, whilst die-hard BMW fans were appalled.
Either way, the man is a veteran in the field and, even though he was blamed for his ideas, he did bring a touch of creativity in the BMW ranks. After leaving the German company 4 years ago, he started his own studio and is now working on his own, still being respected by the people in the automotive industry.
In a recent interview for Automotive News Europe, Bangle claimed that today, in the current car industry, there's a dire need for change and that originality is simply lacking in the field.
“There is a real need for a change and that’s just not happening. Even concept cars today simply anticipate the next production model coming down the line. Is this innovation? No. And at the end of the day this is what’s preventing car design from moving into a new era,” he said.
Those are some brave ideas that we do resonate with. If you watched the industry lately, you surely noticed that Chris is actually right. It's not a bad thing that Concept cars get materialized but it is a bad thing that all manufacturers seem to go down one path: making cars look alike between themselves. That not only confusing, it's also frustrating!
