The Super Sport package, which came out in 1961 on the Impala, turned out to be a brilliant idea, as it ended up becoming a marketing machine and an important catalyst for growing Chevrolet sales.
It's safe to say the original SS wasn't as intriguing as its later siblings, though I'd still gladly drive a 1961 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport. The package was available for just a little over $53, bringing only minor improvements whose role was to improve the performance appetite of an otherwise large car.

The Super Sport later evolved into a superstar, getting more performance upgrades, exclusive engines, and cosmetic touches that easily turned heads.

It's why an all-original, complete, unrestored, and unmolested Impala SS costs more than you can imagine today, sometimes surpassing $100K if the vehicle is in tip-top shape. The plan B for anyone who wants a Super Sport is to get a project and restore it to factory specifications one step at a time.

Someone on eBay says they have such a project, though the photos show that bringing this Impala SS back to the road won't be an easy mission. Some assembly is already required, as the car was originally supposed to get an overhaul before it left for a new home. The frame has been completely redone, and the Impala also sports new brake and fuel lines.

The vehicle has been sitting for a very long time, waiting for this anticipated restoration that never came. It now exhibits a rather rough shape, with the engine and the transmission missing. The Impala rolled off the assembly lines with a manual gearbox, but someone changed it to an automatic along the way.

The lack of an engine is probably the main thing that could make Impala fanboys walk away. Bringing this SS back to factory specifications would require additional effort, time, and money, and not everybody is willing to go this route.

However, many Impala SS models end up getting massive engine upgrades, as owners don't mind converting them into restomods stealing the show at car events. It's probably the reason this 1962 model is getting so much attention on eBay, as the car received 53 bids in just a couple of days online.

The top offer is currently $4,200, but it's not enough to unlock the reserve. eBay seller selling4funsell did not reveal the reserve's value, so it's impossible to tell how high the bidding must go to unlock it. However, I guess the reserve isn't very far from the current top offer, so with a little luck, someone would trigger it in the remaining three days until the auction ends.

The winner must pick up the Impala SS from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
