Europe's First EV Fast-Charging Station Inaugurated in the Netherlands

Europe has seen its first commercial electric vehicle fast-charging station being inaugurated in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.The station, which has been developed by Epyon, a European developer of smart charging solutions for the EV market, will be located at the city’s Tamoil petrol station and will be run by Dutch utility company Essent, part of RWE.

The fast-charging station offers 50 kilowatts of power, which can fully charge vehicles in only 9 minutes.

"We cooperated with a number of partners in this initiative, including the energy supplier Essent, the Leeuwarden community, the province of Friesland, Taxi Kijlstra and Tamoil and are excited to have reached this milestone, which is a key stepping-stone in the rollout of the European fast-charging infrastructure."

“The unveiling of the fast-charging station at Tamoil in Leeuwarden can be marked as the beginning of a roll out of fast-charging stations. We are committed to become the leader in the supply of electrical energy for the EV industry," said Kjell Biezen, Electric Transportation Manager at Essent.

Taxi Kijlstra, the largest taxi firm in the north of the Netherlands plans to take advantage of the recent development and use the station for charging its 9 person electric taxi vans. The taxi company's converted electric vehicles allow the drivers to cover a distance of 100 miles for a single fast charge.
