Emotional Alonso Set for Renault Good Bye

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will likely be the last race for plenty of drivers currently racing in Formula One with their present teams. However, all eyes are set on 2 basic characters of the sport, namely Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard is to take the Finn's place at Maranello next year, while Raikkonen's destination for 2010 is yet unknown.

Yesterday, we've reported that Raikkonen is aiming to make a great final outing for Ferrari, meaning he wants to bring enough points for the prancing horse for a 3rd overall position in the constructors' standings.

Being that Renault has meant so much in Alonso's career – this was practically the team where he won his only 2 world titles – the Spaniard is also set on making an emotional exit from Enstone. When asked by reporters how he wants to end his second stint at Renault, Alonso revealed he wants to reward his team with a great result.

I would love to finish the season and my Renault career with a great result. It will be an emotional race because I have enjoyed so many special memories with this team and I am leaving behind a lot of friends. Renault is one of the great teams in Formula One and I look forward to fighting with them on the track in the years ahead,” said Alonso in a preview of the Abu Dhabi race.

Following his forced exit from McLaren at the end of 2007, when he left Woking because he was feeling disadvantaged in his relationship with Lewis Hamilton, Renault were the ones to give him a hand in returning to greatness. He worked closely with a non-winning team throughout 2008 and eventually finished last season on a high, scoring the most points in the last 5 races of the championship (2 wins included).

He's made a huge contribution to the team, especially winning two world championships in 2005 and 2006 so he will be missed enormously. It's often said that he is the best driver on the grid and I wouldn't disagree with that so we're understandably sad to see the end of our very successful relationship,” added team principal Bob Bell.
