Ecclestone: "Senna's Death Was Good for F1!"

Bernie Ecclestone surprised the world of Formula One once again this weekend, following the chaotic yet title-deciding racing weekend at Interlagos. Following his pro-Hitler comments that provoked quite a stir throughout the world – not only in the motor racing area – in recent months, the 78-year old Brit now shocked the world with another statement.

Although admitting the death of multiple F1 champion Ayrton Senna was a tragic loss to the sport, Ecclestone managed to find a positive side to it. And really, his words leave no room for interpretation, as he clearly stated that Senna's death in some way benefited the Great Circle.

He was unfortunate, but the publicity generated by his death was so much ... it was good for F1. It was a shame that we had to lose Ayrton, but it happened. He was very popular, but the actual event interested so many people who did not know about the sport,” Ecclestone was quoted as saying for local Folha de S.Paulo newspaper.

Ecclestone's comments come only a few days after he greeted some members of the Senna family in the F1 paddock at Interlagos. After he met Senna's sister Viviane and her son Bruno, Ecclestone had the wild idea of throwing another pill to the media, now that the title fight in both drivers and manufacturers standings is over.

Senna's nephew Bruno is currently targeting a Formula One drive for next season, after earlier this year failing to secure a racing spot with title-winning outfit Brawn GP. Following Ecclestone's comments, we're not sure how enthused he will be to come and race in a series for which his uncle's death “boosted publicity.”
