Ecclestone, Lauda Thrilled by Alonso-Ferrari Drive at Valencia

The rumor that Fernando Alonso might race in a Ferrari suit at Valencia seems to be getting more serious by the minute. After the Spanish newspaper Diario AS revealed the 2-time world champion is likely to replace injured Felipe Massa in the F60 cockpit, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone yesterday backed the idea as being “great.”

If Renault would release Alonso, and if Ferrari want him, it would be the best thing for Formula One, for Valencia, for everybody,” the Formula One chief executive was quoted as saying to Germany's Auto Bild.

According to the Spanish publication, Renault's ban from the upcoming Grand Prix at Valencia would interfere with some clauses in Alonso's contract – stating that the Enstone based team is obliged to provide the Spaniard a race seat at every grand prix in 2009 and 2010 – that would, consequently, allow Alonso to race for any team he wants in the F1 paddock.

The Ferrari option came as a result of Massa's injury in the Hungarian Grand Prix – he is still hospitalized and uncertain to make the Ferrari cockpit in 2009. In addition, it is believed Alonso has already signed a deal with the Maranello based team, due to come into effect at the beginning of 2010.

Ecclestone is not the only one who would like to see Alonso race for the prancing horse next month, as triple F1 champion and former Ferrari-an Niki Lauda echoed the Brit's comments late yesterday.

Alonso in the Ferrari (in Valencia) is a great idea. At least Ferrari should try it. It would be good for the Scuderia, for Spain, for Alonso and the Formula One,” said the Austrian.

After announcing the Renault ban for the European GP, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) confirmed only the team was subject to the ban, not the drivers. The Enstone based outfit already announced they have lodged an appeal to the Hungarian GP suspension.
