Alonso to Replace Massa at Valencia?

If Renault will lose their appeal to the FIA ban for the European Grand Prix at Valencia, they will not only lose important points in the constructors' classification but also likely to be abandoned by two-time world champion Fernando Alonso.

According to a Spanish media report issued by Diario AS, it seems there are some contractual clauses that oblige the Enstone based team to secure Alonso a seat in the Renault cockpit race in and race out throughout his 2 years of contract (2009 and 2010). Otherwise, the Spaniard would be free to join any other outfit in Formula One.

Although highly unlikely for this to happen – as Alonso is a good friend of Flavio Briatore also – the situation might take an unusual turn in the next few weeks. Again, if Renault DOES NOT WIN THEIR APPEAL TO THE FIA, Alonso might take Ferrari's way at Valencia.

The Spaniard is believed to have already signed a pre-contract with the Maranello based team for the 2010 season, and the prancing horse is already one driver short ahead of the European Grand Prix. With Felipe Massa's medical situation far from cleared out, Ferrari have already admitted, through the voice of CEO Luca di Montezemolo, that they will have to move fast to secure a replacement for the remainder of the 2009 season.

The same Diario AS newspaper revealed there is a high chance of seeing Alonso race in the all-red Ferrari suit from Valencia, as it will only confirm the agreement he has already signed with Stefano Domenicali's team.
