Ducati Multistrada 1200S D|Air is the first mass-produced, standard motorcycle to receive the “Professor Ferdinand Porsche” award. The prize is presented yearly by the Vienna University of Technology and rewards the most innovative technologies in the automotive segment.
This year's event took place today in the Festival Hall of the Vienna University and saw Professor Bernhard Geringer, who is the coordinator of the Committee of Organisers of the "Porsche Award" handing over the award to Federico Sabbioni, Multistrada Project Development Director. Ducati Managing Director Claudio Domenicali was also present at the event.

The “Professor Ferdinand Porsche” award is a formal recognition for both Ducati's and Dainese's efforts to deliver a safer environment for riders. So far, Dainese's D|Air rider airbag is considered to be the benchmark in the personal airbag segment, with a total deployment and full-inflation time of around 45 milliseconds.

Dainese's Technology will become available for third-party riding gear manufacturers

As we reported in late May, Dainese is also taking rider protection one more step into the future. The Italian company will license its racing version D-Air Armor technology to more riding gear manufacturers.

So far, a treat for racing leathers only, the D-Air Armor is already used by Furygan and Vircos in their racing leather suits, with more manufacturers presumably to follow.

The system present on the Multistrada 1200S D|Air is integrated with the motorcycle and communicates with the Ducati Apparel D|air jackets. Multiple sensors detect when a crash is likely to occur and will trigger the gas cartridge inside the jacket, inflating the air bladders before the rider impacts an obstacle.

With the airbag fully inflated by the time the rider or passenger hits the obstacle or ground, the risk of injuries is significantly decreased. The technology has already been tested in MotoGP and proved very efficient in reducing the number and severity of the injuries.

Dainese's strongest competitor remains Alpinestars, with their TechAir airbag system. Back in 2013, we saw Marc Marquez crashing at almost 340 km/h (210 mph) at Mugello and walking away.

We dare say it's not going to be too long until rider airbags become a common presence and standard equipment for riding gear, other than top-drawer racing items.
