Remember when Italian carmakers weren’t bothered by safety this and protection that? The tables have turned now and the times have changed. One of the most notorious recalls of the modern era is one that happened about six years ago, with Ferrari recalling the 458 Italia over spontaneous combustion risks.
It took 11 burnt 458 Italia vehicles and a lot of media coverage for Ferrari to investigate the problem and issue a recall. Maserati, on the other hand, doesn’t wait for something to burn before it decides to initiate a recall campaign. When the House of the Trident called back 984 examples of the Quattroporte GTS in October 2015, the culprit was an incorrectly protected starter motor cable that could lead to an engine compartment fire. Happily, however, nobody got injured.
This attention to the safety of customers continues with the most recent recall put out by Maserati. No less than 28,235 examples of Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles manufactured from February 1, 2013, to November 30, 2015, are targeted because the driver-side floor mat could become dislodged from an anchor. If it does so, the floor mat could get stuck in the acceleration pedal, resulting in a problem that makes Toyota blush. Unintended acceleration is its appellation.
Here’s what Maserati explained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: “In the affected vehicles, the driver-side floor mat anchor may break allowing the floor mat to move and get trapped between the accelerator pedal and the vehicle carpet.” Maserati isn’t aware of any cases of unintended acceleration, injuries or death, nor did the affected owners complain about it.
Scheduled to begin at the end of April, the recall will see the replacement of the driver’s floor mat. There’s a possibility the accelerator pedal cover to be replaced as well, although Maserati didn’t explain why.
