DRIVE C2X, a System Helping Drivers to "See" the "Unseen" Motorcycles

Road safety has been taken to the next level, or at least so it seems with the launch of the DRIVE C2X early warning system. The DRIVE C2X uses the C2C communication system between vehicles and the vehicle to infrastructure (C2I) protocols to detect possible collision courses between bikes and cars.
The principle is a very simple on and previous tests have delivered encouraging results. Bikes and cars are to be equipped with beacons which signal their presence, position and speed to the grid and are distributed to the nearby vehicle operators. In case the grid computers anticipate a potential crossing between the trajectories of a bike and a car, a warning signal is being issued.

The same alarm goes off in case the distance between the two decreases under a specified value, taking into account variables such as speed, weather conditions and so on. The DRIVE C2X will be implemented in several test locations in Europe and is fully compliant with the upcoming ITS standards, thus guaranteeing the ground for a coherent future development.

After the success of previous programs (PReVENT, CVIS, SAFESPOT, COOPERS, and PRE-DRIVE C2X ), the DRIVE C2X is the first one to test the implementation of a real-world data backend for gathering real figures and find the best ways to finish the development of actual commercial products.

The European bikers' support can really help the project take off easier and save some lives, so getting involved is most welcome.
