Here's one piece of news on a very interesting new motorcycle helmet technology from manufacturer 6D: the ODS (omni-directional suspension) ATR-1 helmet.
The ODS is the key element of the whole new design, as it offers multiple energy-dissipation points which help distribute the energy resulting from an impact, thus providing better protection for the head.
This patent-pending kinetic energy management system promises up to 38% better shielding against low-threshold impact energy. The low-threshold impact energy can be estimated to 4 m/s (meters per second) and could be equivalent to 120 G's transferred to the brain using the presently homologated helmets. Now 120 G is twice the force needed for a concussion, so you can figure out for yourselves that we're all playing a dangerous game.
The 6D helmet uses a EPS shell on the inside, much like any other helmet does. But that's where similarities end, as the 6D EPS liner is not attached directly to the outer shell: a special-design array of hourglass-shaped absorbers link the inner EPS foam and the exterior layer of the helmet, offering exceptional impact energy multi-point distribution for both frontal and oblique shocks.
These elastomeric dampers also sport a progressive spring rate directly linked to the compression load and they act in a 360-degree radius. While the outer shell of the 6D ATR-1 is made from a high tech layering of aerospace-grade carbon fiber, fiber glass and kevlar, the space between it and the EPS foam serves as a most efficient venting system for hot air and moisture elimination.
