Do You Know What the Speed Limit Is in NY?

A very crowded city, tons of nationalities and an equal number of approaches to driving collide each day on the streets of the Big Apple. At times, that collision is only a figure of speech, but every now and then, it leaves behind a trail of blood and human remains.

Plagued by drivers who don't obey the speed limit, New York authorities have engaged into a massive campaign meant to remind everyone living or just passing through New York that there is a speed limit in place. And for good reason.

The campaign is part of a broader plan to make the city's streets safer, at least as far as traffic goes. The city plans to advertise, if you like, the speed limit in the city through new signs that will admonish drivers traveling faster and a new ad campaign.

The campaign, instead of going after the emotional persona of the potential driver, as we've seen in similar past campaign across the globe, is trying a more logical explanation as to why the speed limit in New York has been set at... well, you know (or don't you?).

To go with the awareness campaign, the city plans a pilot project in areas of Bronx, where they will bring the speed limit down by 10 mph compared to the rest of the city. The city chose the Claremont section for the project as it has one of the highest rates of crashes in New York, and a lower speed limit there might show whether the idea would work elsewhere as well.
