Dinan Stage 2 Kit for BMW N55 Engines Launched

The time has come for Dinan Engineering to release a Stage 2 kit for the N55 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine from BMW. Even though Steve Dinan, the founder of the company, is no longer overseeing their developments, the American tuner isn’t about to let its fans down.
Unfortunately for them, the reveal comes a little late as the Germans are planning to phase out the N55 engine and replace it with its newer, more efficient and more powerful B58 unit. The new engine makes 326 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque in stock guise, 20 HP and 50 Nm (32 lb-ft) more than the N55.

However, even under these circumstances, the Dinantronics Stage 2 kit will probably be popular amongst Bimmerheads out there as there will be plenty of ‘35i’ models to be tuned even after the engine is retired.

So what does the Stage 2 kit bring?

Going for the Dinantronics Stage 2 kit will add 58 HP and 83 lb-ft (113 Nm) of torque to your car’s total output taking it up from 306 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) to 364 HP and 513 Nm (378 lb-ft) of torque. Those figures are close to what the new M2 is supposed to be making.

The best news about it is that Dinan claims the tune will keep your car emission legal in 50 states so you won’t have any problems with the law.

The pricing stands at $2,249 right now, a $250 increase over the Stage 1 kit. By the way, if you want to spare two and a half Benjamins, you should know that the cheaper alternative is still noteworthy, offering an increase of 76 HP and 80 lb-ft (108 Nm) of torque. Those that bought the Stage 1 kit beforehand will only have to pay $250 extra to get the Stage 2 alternative.

That’s it?

Well, not really. The thing is, in order to get that added performance, the engine will need a bit more breathing room. Therefore, you’ll have to get a new intake as well, a cold air Dinan model being priced at $599. It will purportedly add 10 HP and 15 lb-ft (20 Nm) of torque all on its own if you decide to go for it without the Stage 2 kit.

An exhaust wouldn’t hurt either, to get rid of the extra fumes faster but that’s not a mandatory add-on in this case.
