Dieter Zetsche, Daimler Chairman Until 2013

Just as rumors began pointing on early Wednesday, German group Daimler and its supervisory board extended the contract of Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board, until December 31, 2013.

In addition, Thomas Weber received the same extension of the contract, while Wolfgang Bernhard has been appointed to the newly created position for Mercedes-Benz Cars Production and Procurement, bringing the number of board members to six.

"In accordance with Section 84, Subsection 1 of the German Stock Corporation Act (AktG), the Supervisory Board makes a decision on reappointment after the beginning of the last year of office," Daimler says in a release.

"The three-year extension effective as of January 1, 2011, reflects Daimler’s general policy to conclude contracts for a period of three years, in case of both initial appointments and reappointments."

Dieter Zetsche has been a member of the Daimler board since 1998 and became chairman of the board in 2006. In addition, he leads the Mercedes-Benz Cars division. Weber, member of the board since 2003, is responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development since 2004.

If the contracts of the two hadn't been extended, they would have expired in December this year.

The new addition to the board, Wolfgang Bernhard, is head of the Mercedes-Benz Vans division since April 2009. A man to replace him in the current position will be appointed by Daimler soon.
